What Do Mice With Skin Cancer Have To Do With Natural Skin Care?

If that title has you scratching your head then read on, because mice with skin cancer have lots to do with natural skin care.

A study was done where four moisturisers, each containing Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS), were applied to the skin of mice 5 times a day for 17 weeks.

As a result of the study the conclusion was drawn that the application of these moisturisers to the skin of the mice caused a statistically significant increase in the rate of skin cancer in the mice who had the moisturisers applied, and in particular that this application “increased the total number of histologically characterized tumors by 69%”.

What surprised the scientists was that they were not in fact studying the effects of using those moisturisers on skin cancer in mice, they were actually studying something else. However they were so surprised by the results that they then ran the same test using moisturisers that did not contain Sodium Laurel Sulphate, and found no statistical increase in the rate of skin cancer in the mice.

This is scary stuff. Sodium Laurel Sulphate is found in a wide range of our personal care products such as soaps and shampoos as well as many moisturisers.

The potential health risks of Sodium Laurel Sulphate have been known for some time. As far back as 1983 the Journal of the American College of Toxicology reported on a study on the effects of SLS on rabbits, and reported eye irritation, severe skin irritation and at a concentration of 15% around 20% of rabbits subjected to Sodium Laurel Sulphate died.

You would expect therefore that none of our personal products such as moisturisers would contain Sodium Laurel Sulphate. The sad fact is that they do, along with many other potentially dangerous chemical ingredients.

Equally sad is that there are very effective natural moisturisers available such as avocado oil and macadamia nut oil which are highly effective at moisturising skin and which are entirely safe. But the big name skin companies don’t use them because they are more expensive.

In fact so many potentially dangerous chemical ingredients are now used in such a wide range of our personal products such as soaps and shampoos, cosmetics and skin care products such as moisturisers that there are entire organisations set up to combat this.

There is a powerful move happening amongst consumers who are now turning away from mainstream products containing these chemical ingredients towards much safer, and in many cases even more effective natural products that do not contain potentially risky chemical ingredients.

And of course where there are consumers voting with their feet there are companies catering for this need by producing high quality natural skin care products that do not contain such chemical ingredients as Sodium Laurel Sulphate.
